PAPANGU
PAPANGU is a progressive rock and avant-garde metal band formed in 2012 in João Pessoa, Brazil. Hailing from the easternmost point of the Americas, the group blends the texture and heaviness of stoner and sludge metal with Brazilian syncopated rhythms, the traditional harmonies of Northeastern Brazil, and the dissonant experiments of modern jazz fusion and avant-metal.
They debuted with Holoceno (2021), a critically acclaimed, apocalyptic concept album blending Faustian myth with ecological eschatology, which presented a critique of the Bolsonaro administration’s destruction of the Brazilian environment and its social and political consequences.
Their second album, Lampião Rei, was recorded by 3x Latin Grammy-winning engineer Fernando Sanches in São Paulo, Brazil, featuring guests such as Mariano Sarine (DEAFKIDS), Andrea P. (AD NAUSEAM), and Philippe Bussonnet (Magma), and was mixed by Berlin heavy psych expert Richard Behrens, known for his collaborations with Elder and Kadavar.
